Background Cadmium was discovered in Germany in 1817 by Friedrich Strohmeyer. Cadmium and its compounds are toxic, however it was used to treat many illnesses in the early 1900's.
Alloy Cadmium is used in some of the lowest melting alloys. It is also used in bearing alloys, because of its low coefficent of friction and good fatigue resistance.
Paint Pigment Cadmium forms various salts, which are used in paint pigments. These pigments are toxic. The most common pigments are yellow pigments and red pigments.
Batteries The majority of cadmium is used to create batteries. In NiCd batteries, the nickel and cadmium are used as electrodes. These batteries are rechargeable and efficient.
