Metallurgy Chromium provides a shiny finish with corrosion resistance. It is commonly used in cutlery, chrome plating, and in anondized aluminum.
Background In 1797, Louis Nicolas Vauquelin received crocoite ore, with which he could produce chromium oxide. In 1798, he discovered detectable traces of chromium in gemstones. Later, he successfully isolated elemental chromium. In the 1800's, chromium was used in paints and tanning salts. Currently, eighty-five percent of chromium is used in metal alloying.
Dye and Paint Chromium is used as an emerald green glass colorant in glass making. It is used in production of synthetic rubies, and it is also used in yellow paint.
