Background Germanium is a silver-white, lustrous, hard metalloid. Germanium is chemically similar to tin.
Chromatography A major use for germanium is for the replacement of silica in chromatography. It is compatible with the silica network present when in the silica stationary phase.
Infrared Germanium has a small band gap, which lets it respond to infrared light. It is used in spectroscopes and other equipment that uses sensitive infrared detectors. It is especially useful in wide angle and microscope lenses. It can be cut and polished for many infrared uses.
