Notes on the Storage and Transportation of Zinc Powder

Zinc powder should be packed and sealed to avoid moist air and stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated warehouse with the temperature not exceeding 25 degrees Celsius and relative humidity less than 75%. By all means avoid storing with other materials, for example, oxidizing agents, acids, alkalis, amines, chlorinated hydrocarbons, etc. Storage areas should be equipped with explosion-proof lighting, ventilation facilities and suitable material in case of leakage.

Zinc powder should be transported in removable head steel drums or middling open steel drums with inner plastic bags or kraft paper sacks (steel thickness: 0.5 mm, net weight: ≤50 kg), thread mouth glass bottles, glass bottles with iron caps, plastic bottles or wooden boxes with inner metal drums/cans and so on.

Transport vehicles must be installed with the appropriate variety and quantity of fire equipment and leakage emergency handling equipment, and their exhaust pipes must have fire retardant device. Do ensure that the container would not leak, or fall, or drop, or be damaged during transport. Never pack or ship with oxidizing agents, acids, alkalis, amines, chlorinated hydrocarbons or food chemicals. Transit should prevent sunlight, rain or high temperature and always stay away from fire and heat even during stopovers. Transportation vehicles/boats must stay dry and have good rainproof facilities, and should be thoroughly cleaned after every use.

Zinc powder in the event of spills, leakage of contaminated areas should be isolated, restricted access, and cut off the fire source immediately. Emergency personnel are recommended to wear self-pressurized respirators and anti-static clothing. Do not get close to leakage directly. If the leakage amount is small, first avoid raising dust, use non-sparking tools to collect in dry, clean, covered containers, then transfer for recycling. If it is a large scale leakage, first cover the area with plastic sheetings or canvas, and then operate under the guidance of experts.

Enclosed operation should be paid special attention to during zinc metal powder transportation. Operators must go through specialized training and strictly adhere to operating instruction. Operators are supposed to wear self-contained dust-proof respirators, safety chemical goggles, and anti-static clothing. Keep away from fire and heat. No Smoking at workplace where explosion-proof ventilation systems and equipment should be installed. Avoid generating dust or exposure to oxidizing agents, acids, bases, amines or chlorinated hydrocarbon, particularly, water. Always be cautious while shipping and discharging to prevent damage of packages or containers. Equip with appropriate variety and quantity of fire equipment and leakage emergency handling equipment. Empty containers might have residues.

Special attention to following tips during the transportation of zinc powder:

Personal protection: enclosed operation with safety shower and eyewash equipment;

Respiratory protection: operate with self-contained dust-proof respirator or air respirators, if necessary;

Eye protection: wear safety chemical goggles;

Physical protection: wear anti-static clothing;

Hand protection: wear protective gloves;

Extra protection: no smoking, eating or drinking at work site; take a shower after every work; have pre-employment and periodic medical examinations.

Disposal of zinc waste:

zinc powder disposal should refer to national and local regulations. Restore the original state of the material for re-use. It is recommended not to let this substance into the environment as it can be hazardous to the environment.
