Background Titanium diboride is a hard ceramic compound. It has very good wear resistance and is resistant to oxidation in air up to 1000°C. It is also resistant to hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids, however it reacts with alkalis, nitric and sulphuric acids. Uncharacteristically for a ceramic, titanium diboride is a reasonable electrical conductor. It can be used as an anode material in aluminum smelting. It can also be shaped by electrical discharge machining.
Impact Resistant Armour Titanium diboride's combination of high hardness and moderate strength make it a good candidate for ballistic armour.
Aluminum Smelting The chemical invertness of titanium diboride along with its good electrical conductivity make it good for use as cathodes for primary aluminum smelting.
