Background Titanium occurs principally in mineral deposits of rutile and ilmenite. It is found in almost all living things, rocks, water bodies, and soils. The metal is extracted by the Kroll process or Hunter process. The most useful properties of the metal are corrosion resistance, and also the greatest strength-to-weight ratio of any metal.
Medical Since titanium is not rejected by the body, it is used in many medical applications. Hip balls and sockets made of titanium can stay in place for up to 20 years. When used in dental implants, titanium can remain in place for over 30 years. Becaues titanium is non-ferromagnetic, patients with titanium implants can use magnetic resonance imaging to be examined. Titanium is also used in surgical instruments, wheelchairs, crutches and many more medical products.
Pigments, Additives and Coatings Titanium is refined and used as titanium dioxide in a white pigment. It is also used in cement, gemstones and paper. It has also been used in air purifiers as a filter coating and to protect windows on buildings from UV light.
Marine and Aerospace Titanium's high tensile strength to density ratio, high corrosion resistance, and ability to withstand moderately high temperatures, titanium alloys are commonly used in aircraft, naval ships, armor plating, missiles and spacecraft. Due to it's high corrosion resistance to sea water, it is used to make propeller shafts and rigging and in the heat exchangers of desalination plants. It is also used in heater-chillers for salt water aquariums. Another use of titanium is for strengthening fishing line and leader, and also for divers' knives.
Industrial Titanium pipe and process equipment are used in the chemical and petrochemical industries for corrosion resistance. The pulp and paper industry uses titanium for its resistance to corrosive material like sodium hypo chlorite or wet chlorine gas.
Automotive Industry Titanium metal is used in automotive applications, particularly in automobile or motorcycle racing. Reduction of weight with high strength and rigidity are important to the automotive industry.
Hammer Heads Hammer heads of titanium were first introduced in 1999. Due to their light weight, the hammer handle could be longer, therefore delivering more energy to the nail. Also, titanium generates 3% recoil compared to steel which generates about 27%.
Sporting Goods Titanium is put to use in many sporting goods.Tennis rackets, golf clubs, lacrosse stick shafts; cricket, hockey, lacrosse, and football helmet grills; and bicycle frames and components all put titanium to use. Alloys of titanium are used in spectacle frames. This results in a rather expensive, but highly durable and long lasting frame which is light in weight and causes no skin allergies. Many backpackers use titanium equipment, including eating utensils, lanterns, and cookware.
